Musings on what it takes to be successful at this game. [Jul. 5th, 2009|01:04 am]
I'm starting over with online poker again. In the past month or two one thing has become extremely clear: It doesn't matter how good I am, I will never be successful without adhering to bankroll management. Seriously. Until I do, I'm just gambling.

Here's a snippet from a post I made on PSORG:

Look, I know I blow up rolls and have made mistakes... but I've been constantly increasing the amount of profits from poker each year since 2006. 2005 was negative, 2006 was slightly positive, 2007 was a little better than 2006, and 2008 was a five figure year. 2009 will be too, hopefully a little better. Have I been able to keep a roll online for a long period of time? Not yet... but I'm getting there. It's a learning process. Three years ago I couldn't keep a bankroll larger than 1k. Now 1k is chump change.

My recent blowup can be attributed to three factors:
1. Stupid gambling. Playing high limit cash games, where I may or may not be +EV but it doesn't matter since I should always expect negative variance to hit first.

2. A pretty awful run in MTTs in June. Lots of deep runs but no final tables. That's just bad luck when you look at how I went out/why etc.

3. Trying to beat cash games within my bankroll... I still haven't beat NL yet. I didn't have that big of a sample and I'd like to attribute it to negative variance, but I'm not sure so I don't have a whole lot of confidence in my cash game ability yet.

I tried to beat NL cash games by jumping into NL100, and it didn't go so well. That's fine. I'm going to go the ultra-conservative-makeit3bets-approved route... 40 buy-ins for a level. That means I'm going to put $1k online in a few days, and start playing 25NL. The most important thing is truly sticking to my rules... and rewarding myself after 1k profit at 25NL with a jump to 50NL.

I might move back to tournaments on a different site in the future, but for now, I need some success, and this is how I'm going to do it.

I want to play 40,000 hands by the end of the month at 25NL and be up $1k. I think that's quite do-able and that's the plan.

So this is it. I'm a professional poker player. [Jan. 12th, 2009|03:13 am]
I'm officially using the term because... well, frankly, it applies.

1. Poker is my main source of income, and in January already I've made more than double what I make the whole year as a CA in Westerlin (not knocking the job, I love it, but this is a fact).

2. I'm 21, and I have a live poker room 5 minutes away. Small sample size aside, I estimate I can win at least $50/hr (my sample right now has a winrate of much much higher that really shouldn't be sustainable) and thats just playing 1/2NL. I'm building a bankroll for live play that will allow me to play 2/5 and possibly higher.

I'm almost always the best player at every table I play. I have the abilities to adapt based on the type of table I'm on, and I can be profitable in every situation.

A professional poker player tends to be viewed as being a "baller" of sorts, and I'm not there yet, but for the time being poker is most certainly my source of income, and it's one I'm quite proud of considering how hard it is to get a solid job as a college student.

I had hoped to make over $50,000 this year playing poker. I'm already a fifth of the way there. Incredible.

October... Slow and steady wins the race? [Nov. 1st, 2008|04:33 pm]

That's my October earnings. As you can see, not a lot happened in October. I'm significantly happy with how cash games have gone... That's represented mainly by Cake Poker, where I've been very profitable. Tournaments haven't gone so well (I've run awful)... hoping to have a better November!

Back online... at 4 sites. [Oct. 13th, 2008|03:56 am]
I decided to refocus and get back to it.

I'm playing at four sites... all for different purposes.

Full Tilt Poker ($100 dep.) - I'm seriously only playing here for the Midnight Madness. It's one of the best values in MTT poker... very easy tournament that I've won twice and I'm looking for a third win.

PokerStars ($500 dep.) - The best tournament site online, but tough competition.

Cake Poker ($900 dep.) - The fishiest cash game site I've seen, and I have solid rakeback + a good bonus to boot.

UltimateBet ($500 dep.) - Similar to Cake, a little tougher games but not by much.

I've kind of had a slow start... As you can see I've deposited $2k, my bankroll is sitting around $1850 but I have my hopes up for a good finish to the month. I'd like to be at $3k come Halloween.

Busto... lol [Oct. 9th, 2008|12:29 am]
Not much to say. I'm up $12k this year net, and I'm basically broke online.

I've gotta rethink everything.

Withdrew 2k, now my bankroll is sitting at like $650. [Sep. 24th, 2008|02:51 am]
I've had a bad couple weeks, and decided to withdraw a couple more thousand. I need the money, and it'll allow me to drop down in buy-ins which should hopefully help me regain some confidence.

Not much else to say, except I'm up 12k (withdrawn) this year.

Brief update, hit $3500... [Sep. 15th, 2008|02:04 am]
So I can't be too upset with how September is going. July and August were pretty awful, and so far I've been able to get up to about $3500 this month.

I won a seat to WCOOP #20 a couple nights ago for $1050, I decided to take the W$ and I was able to trade them for like 95%, so I got a really good deal.

Tonight, I final tabled a $11 1r/1a... and ran QQ into KK six-handed, very unlucky. That was still a significant cash and was a nice way to finish the night.

I'm in a TLB prop bet on 2+2, so I'm really looking to have a strong month. The last two months I made top 1k for TLB, and I really do believe I can do it again for a third month straight. My goal is to do that, and also finish the month above $5,000.

Top 1000 TLB again this month... two in a row. [Sep. 1st, 2008|12:17 am]
Has this been a good month money-wise? Not really. But I can enjoy that I've becoming a more consistent MTT player... this is my second month in a row achieving top 1000 TLB on PokerStars.

It almost didn't happen. I had a pretty bad poker day today and headed into tonight around 1150th in TLB points... obviously today is August 31 so I had to win some scores tonight to hop into the top 1000 like I wanted.

I won a $12 180 man for like 275 tlb points, and that was all I needed. I'm still in a couple other tourneys that count towards August, but I'm standing around 850th right now... more than enough.

Obviously I want to have some profitable months as well (and I'd exchange profitable months for top 1000 tlb anyday) but this is kind of a way to show myself I really am doing well.

Small update... not much to really report. [Aug. 21st, 2008|12:32 am]
The biggest thing is I finally have a competent internet connection again.

Returning to Augustana has been exciting, but their internet is piss-poor and really not good enough for me to play poker with any legitimate seriousness. I opted to get my own connection instead.

I'm paying $60/month for a USB Air Card with Sprint... basically it means my laptop has internet EVERYWHERE... which is freaking awesome.

My bankroll is around $3500... I lost a bit from my peak, but none of it was really spewy, I've just gone on a nice little non-cash streak.

I also found out people read this which is kind of exciting. I've always had the mindset that I'm posting this for a record a few years from now, when I finally achieve something in poker. But I have no problem having readers right now! :)

Anyway, gl at the tables... hopefully I'll have something nice to report before the month ends.

Having a good August... [Aug. 15th, 2008|08:19 am]
I've apparently played like 44 tournaments this month, which is super low volume for me. I've only cashed 6 of them, but the cashes have mattered.

$22/180 - 15th
HORSE $33 - 16th/120
NLHE $33 - 3rd/774
NLHE $11 - 5th/2268
NLHE $11 6max - 2nd/589
NLHE $27.50 - 3rd/330

By my count that's 4 final tables in a row while in the money, which is pretty disgusting in itself.

My bankroll is floating around $5k right now, which is hella cool.

Oh, additional brag - I'm an RA on the football players' floor and my residents haven't done anything really wrong yet. I love it. Makes my job easier.
